Perhaps typically Nancy starts the race well, with the better start and choosing the better course round the Island.

Perhaps typically as well she then stops thinking and makes strategic mistakes, while John starts thinking and so manages to get back from a hopeless position. Nancy should have 'covered' him, staying at all times between Swallow and the finish. All sailors know this rule, yet even America's Cup races have been lost by not following it.

But what I am saying is that there can't have been a huge difference in boat speeds or John would not have been in a position to use better tactics to win
