It has never struck me as anything other than a "real" story; it is quite different from PD and ML and I am not unduly bothered by the late nesting of the Great Northern Divers; I definitely remember seeing Arctic Terns and ptarmigan nesting on Spitzbergen in mid-July, which is quite a possible time of year for the book.
At risk of sounding like a certain computer programme, could one of our North American brothers and sisters advise on when Loons do, in fact, nest?
