I remember my old high school English teacher asking us this question. During a major flood somewhere in England caused by a very high tide, someone piloting a boat rammed a car being driven in the opposite direction. The driver claimed he was right because he was in a car driving in the correct (left hand lane).The pilot claimed he had right of way because he was obeying maritime rules by sailing on the right. Who was in the right?

P.S. to Ed. In your Sense of Place article, you mentioned stone walls being passed with a foot to spare. Make that inches.
