Along the lines of the Noah Webster story is the anecdote about Samuel Johnson, the earlier lexicographer. Johnson, who was famously not the cleanliest of men, was riding in a coach. One of the passengers, a woman, made a number of comments about his smell. In exasperation, the good Doctor corrected her, saying, "Madam, you smell, I stink."
