The recent discussion on driving on the other side of the road reminds me that little while ago one of our North American contributors started a thread about going to the Lake District, how to get there, the problems of driving there and what he should do when he got there. Another resource worth consulting is John Wilson Parker's An Atlas of the English Lakes, which has lots of useful information, as well as really good maps (which can be used to supplement the obligatory OS maps). Wilson's book is quite recent, so most of the information is current (eg addresses of people to contact if you want to go boating on certain lakes (eg Ennerdale Water).
