Thanks for thought-provoking message-- I can personally verify that the views in South Lakeland haven't changed much over 55 years (w. the addition of a few tasteful buildings like the Natarium (?) at Newby Bridge, the new Shopping Center in Ambleside, the Keswick Theater-by-the-lake; but this has been done thru rigorous zoning); and the same is true of a few other beauty spots (Cambridge, Oxford, Canterbury, Stratford..).. However, on driving between these spots, most older British-born people & new visitors will be aware of massive overcrowding and other very obvious trends. This result (of a 50-year national policy) might be acceptable and even quaint in the US (because there are enormous open spaces), but - to some - totally unacceptable and inexplicable in England. It would be OT to discuss this further (e.g. to bring up the US Audubon Society political progam) so I won't.
