Well, the Chinese do it too. Whenever we have friends staying with us from China or Hong Kong they always take groups shots - my wife and I included. In this case the idea is to have a record of their friends at the Lambert house or wherever it may be. But since the same people show up in the pictures year after year I'm not so sure it isn't similar to the Japanese idea. I'm willing to bet that if one of the Swallows or Amazons had a camera, Missee Lee would have snapped away happily at group shots of the S & A's as they clustered on the poop deck of the Half Moon.(Somehow gotta bring this diversion back to Ransome).
