And just think of all the artists who have included themselves in their paintings (van Eyck reflected in the painting of the Arnolfini wedding, for example). Not to mention Tensing and (oh, heck, I cant remember how to spell it) Edmund Hillary photogaphing each other at the top of Everest. There seems to be a human need to record the fact that We Were There - and for sure Dick took happy holiday snaps of his friends as well as birds and such.
