Peter H. is correct that XP requires a lot more in the way of memory, processor power, and disk storage. It is, however, also more stable and definitely supports a wider variety of add-ons and external devices.

My own advice to anyone would be to NOT attempt to upgrade to XP from an earlier version of Windows, but bite the bullet and get a new machine with XP pre-installed. That in fact is what the manufacturers would prefer you to do for obvious reasons. But my reason is that little attention is being spent on making the upgrade path from an earlier system to XP smooth, practical, or error-free, and it is perhaps more sensitive to different combinations of components.

Although scrapping one's old system may be irritating, it is also true that the relative costs of getting a new machine versus upgrading your old system to the point where XP is practical, plus paying for the operating system, have pretty well converged.

And how was Helvellyn, Peter?
