Well mostly, but in PM I doubt if the GA would have been put off by a reassuring phone call, any more than she was put off by the telegram they sent! You could make trunk phone calls then, though they were less convenient because "long distance" tended to be delay working ie you were rung back when a circuit was avaliable, and (as at Lanehead) the (only) phone in the house was in an inaccessible place under the stairs or in a storage room.
