I think that some further support for this view of Ransome's own attitude is in the scene in BS when the Coots are with Harry Bangate, the eel-man. No doubt the Coots are shocked by Old Harry's attitude to shooting birds and so forth, but Ransome seems to have quite some sympathy for the view of the old Broadsman.
