I think that you will find it was about two years ago that all the planets were in a line across the sky and much closer together. Since then the outer planets have moved on in their orbits so the display is spread out more.
I remember being able to watch the gradual movements of the planets over a few weeks and also seeing Mercury for the first time with the naked eye (OK I will admit to glasses).
