I fear Mr Muffit's enthusiasm for the skill and bravery of the Captain and crew of the Surprise misled him in his view of the action. It is quite clear that Surprise crossed the Marengo's bow receiving fire for a short time and stayed ahead of her until she turned away, at no time were they "yardarm to yardarm".
