My mother always took an American Cloth table cloth to picnics. It is (usually brightly-coloured) cloth with a rubber/plastic (the former in AR's day, surely) glazing and usually a flocked underside (to minimise sliding). Waterproof (good for UK picnics on wet grass) and easy to wipe clean.

Presumably first imported from the US.
