Please could someone who knows what an English Farm Kitchen would have been like in the 1930's, describe the fireplace and cooking arrangements that would have been in Mrs Dixon's kitchen. We know there is a fire in the room - Mr Dixon sits beside it drinking his tea and Nancy and Peggy stand in front of it drying their shoes. We also read of Mrs Dixon holding a fryingpan over the fire cooking the Ds bacon. Is her oven a separate entity with a chimney of its own, or is it an integral part of the open fire? Presumably she had a range top to cook on, so why cook the bacon over the fire? Quicker? Also, where would her kettle be? Would it hang permanently simmering over the fire? I have a lovely mental image of this cosy happy room, but the fire/oven has always been a bit of a blur! Thanks.
