I agree that the pot should be shoved to one side, but in the picture, Dot has the pot lid in her hand, and the pot is still centered over the hottest part of the flame.

In SA, in the illustration "THE CAMP FIRE", over the open fire Susan has the kettle hanging from a cross stick, in a manner somewhat like the pole across the fireplace in the Dogs' Home. The bothering detail about Susan's campfire is that this cross stick seems to be relatively low, and thus in the heat of the fire. It is a wonder that the cross stick does not itself ignite and thus tumble the kettle into the flames. As for getting to the kettle, assuming this cross stick is still solid, one could grab the stick by both ends, with the kettle dangling in the middle, and thus pick up the whole assembly and set the kettle still dangling from its stick onto the ground safely away from the fire, at which point now the kettle can be accessed without being burned in the process.
