Nobody seems to have picked up your question about staying in London. It is horribly expensive!

I'd try the internet and see what's available online. Some of the big UK chains may be worth checking & sometimes have offers - Travelodge, Premier Lodge, Novotel, Travel Inn, Thistle Hotels ...
I only stay in London when the company's paying! You don't say exactly where you want to stay - there's lots of railway stations in London. If you're going to the North West then I guess it'll be Euston or St Pancras / Kings Cross for North/North East.

Rail travel is expensive but discounts can be had by booking in advance.

Going by car is good but our roads can be very busy (and remember we drive on the left!) Loads of car hire firms on the internet. I don't know what people are talking about with wheeltrims & kerbs - wuzzes, just be careful. Though do take care to check the car carefully for damage before you take it out - some companies are notorious for trying to charge for bumps, scratches etc.

Hope you have a good trip - it should be reasonably quiet in the Lakes but good weather (hopefully).
