I recently drove from London to Sedbergh (on the eastern edge of the Lake District) via the M1 and M6. Took five hours, but a bit of a boring drive and we got caught in dreadful traffic jams on the last 30 or 40 miles of the M6 as we approached Kendal. We came back via the North York Moors and down the A1(M). This I would very strongly recommend. It was incredibly attractive, and took about 4.5 hours.

If I had ten pounds for every person who has since told me that the M6 gets dreadfully jammed at that point, I could afford to stay at the Ritz!
