As he's Mrs. Blackett's younger brother, I'd be surprised if he's even very far into his 40s. Baldness can be deceiving, especiallly when all we have to go on are b/w line drawings.
As to the late 30s, even accepted chronology puts Missee Lee in the very early 30s.
Given that ML, like PD, is generally accepted as "stories told by themselves", what their parents would allow in AR's "real world" become less relevant.
I can see the story arising while they're sitting around Holly Howe after dinner/in the igloo/(less likely) the campfire during the remainder of the SD summer and someone comments on Mother and Bridget going out to visit Daddy in Malta before/in anticipation of his next posting to the China Seas. From which they naturally start planning the next cruise on the fictional Wild Cat, with an objective of visiting him out there, and take it from there . . .
