Have a look at a road map of Britain, Ed, especially the English part, and you will find many remarkably straight roads which often go for long distances. These are the ancient freeways of the Roman Empire. They stop at Hadrian's Wall in the north, and Offa's Dyke in the west. They are now incorporated into the road system of England, carrying big trucks and little cars in close proximity.
