LAst summer my wife and I took a boat around Coniston and passed quite close to Mecca. The secret harbour was occupied by a couple of boats with loosely luffing sails. A pink and white narwhal was happily spouting away, while its young leaped from the rocks. Secret no longer, alas. So close and yet so far. Still, I have the pictures to pore over. You lucky types who live in the Lake District! Doesn't it make you terribly smug? Perhaps in the dead of winter it will be deserted. Then I will leave my boat, creep silently ashore and visit all the well-known places. They will be exactly where there should be. From beneath the lookout tree I will gaze out over the lake, misty in the softly falling rain. From the eastern shore, a little dinghy with a patched brown sail will approach the island, beating against the gusting westerly wind. . .
