This set my thoughts going in a stupid meandering path. What examples do we see of the characters buying something that they might have made?

For some reason, the first example that sprang to my mind of anything being bought was the copper sheet that was bought for Dick's pigeon warning mechanism. (I've sometimes wondered how easy it would have been to find copper sheet on sale in Rio, but that's not relevant to my present meanderings.)

And then I thought: I suppose to demonstrate a proper Ransomeish spirit they'd have had to mine and smelt their own copper, rather than buying some from a native shop.

Er, just a minute ...
