Shop originally I'd imagine, as ISTR references to the stoneware crocks it came in (ah, Keiller's Dundee - just hasn't been the same since they went to white glass with twist-off lids!). However the crocks were undoubtedly reused for homemade preserves (I know they were around our house), so we might leave the question open. It may hinge more on the practicality of making marmalade from bought oranges vs. buying the marmalade - my mother mostly used ours for strawberry or raspberry jam. I can't see Mrs. Jackson or Mrs. Dixon doing otherwise, or Mrs. Walker bringing preserves with her on the journey, so my vote's for the shop.

As a side note, I see the empty original crocks going for three times the cost of a full new jar! Wonder where I stored that set of eight my mother saved for me to use as bachelor-pad glasses?
