Bill didn't accept Dorothea's suggestion (presumably made without knowing what was burning) that the flames should be slopped over the pudding.

So he probably put the meths onto the plate, not the pudding, before lighting it. Some would have soaked into the bottom of the pudding, but most of the pudding would probably have been uncontaminated.

Don't you have Christmas puddings over there, Ed? I do remember having to explain what one was to US Customs at Idlewild (as it was then).
