In chapter 18 of PP, Dick is looking at the “red dirt” that Squashy Hat is marking with white spots, and speculates that “perhaps ..... we’d find that it was all one crack.” AR says (third not first person?) that “Dick ... had come very near the truth”. Then Squashy Hat himself turns up! Later (chapter 22) Nancy realises that the white spots are in a line - like leading Lights (John) - and the line is pointing to Golden Gulch and the cave with the gold oops copper pyrites!

At the end (chapter 35) Dick asks what the Gossom is, and Captain Flint tells him that it is decomposed ore, no good in itself but a sign of good stuff lower down.

Usually AR has one character explain technical matters to the others, but in chapter 18 he has to interpolate his own comment.
