Dick's school has been discussed before. There is a theory (which I sort-of subscribe to, indeed I was an inventor of it, though there may have been others independently) that he was at Shrewsbury. This is based mainly on wild extrapolation from the fact that in PM he joined the train at Crewe as a connection.

On the rugby matter, could it be that it was usual at that time at boys' public schools to refer to rugby union as "football"?
