The answer is - we don't know. Once we start going outside the stories and querying events, we could go on for ever. Surely we can simply accept the various family set-ups as AR has described them?

My favourite example of 'foreshadowing', because it puts the G.A. in her place, is the last sentence in Ch XXIII of PM:

And Mary was off for her holiday and never thought of Miss Turner again until she came back a week later.
