Pike Rock first appears to the Swallows in Chapter 3 of Swallowdale.

"Rock on the port bow," sung out Roger, just as they turned in.
"A beast, too" said John. "I don't remember seeing it last year."

The mate comments
"The day we were here was the day after the storm when the lake was very high. It must be much lower to-day."

later in Chapter 4

"That's Pike Rock," said Nancy, pointing out the rock oposite the southern of the two litle headlands. "You wouldn't be able to see it if the lake wasn't so low."
