Dennis Bird told me that as a boy he became so impatient at Ransome's failure to write a sequel to PICTS AND MARTYRS (admittedly there was a war on - and this may have accounted for the delay in publication of GREAT NORTHERN?) that he wrote his own - and illustrated it too!
Plot summary? The Walkers arrive for the summer holidays to find another family camping on Wild Cat Island.
