Pat Cooksley claims copyright of the actual words from a performance in Coventry in 1969, and gives the original title as “The Sick Note” with alternative titles:

“Why Paddy’s not at work today”
“Murphy and the Bricks” (not with an apostrophe Brick’s!!) etc also
“Mitch’s Masonry Theme Song”

He says that the original theme/story goes back beyond Gerald Hoffnung’s performance to the Oxford Union in 1958; and as far back as the 1920s & 1930s.
