In chapter 3 of SA, there is another place where the author refers
to himself in the First Person, as he did when describing the
leading lights to be similar to a COLON character, as "I"

Interesting that all the "I" examples are in SA. It looks like AR decided that, despite being a device that's often used in 'children's books', this wasn't a good way to address them; possibly he felt it was patronising. I'd say he was right. Anyway, he dropped it, and so got better as he went along. A great virtue...
