From a purely writer point-of-view, having the Amazons turn up too soon especially on the island, the reader wouldn't get the chance to explore and discover along with the Swallows. Only Pigeon Post has the Amazons involved from the very beginning and in most of the 'lake' books it is evident that when the Amazons arrive, the action moves off the island far more. With S&A and Swallowdale set firmly in and around the lake, Pigeon Post somewhat further away and Winter Holiday, while still at the lake, set in unusual conditions, I think Ransome speedily discovered the limitations of the island and the lake. Therefore his later books were set, with the exception of Picts & Martyrs, in other settings. Even with Picts & Martyrs, you get to explore the lake and learn to sail fairly unhindered by the more knowledgeable Amazons.
