Rowing a good bit of the length of Coniston Water to Wild Cat would by no means have been too much for the young(er) Amazons. When my family moved to the Lake District, my oldest brother and I several times rented a rowboat on Derwent Water and spent hours visiting the islands and rowing as far as we could up the Derwent. Admittedly, he was in his 20s, but I was only 12 and did at least my fair share of the rowing.
I think we are so used to being carried everywhere by machines that we forget how much we can achieve without them.

(True, on my two visits to Peel Island I have used powered boats -- my justification is a young family and uncertain weather -- the power boats have cabins!)
