I too have always loved this passage - although I think AR suddenly realised he had to account for the existance of this building and edited in this piece a little clumsily. I like the 'over a hundred years ago' feeling, as though the man and his place had been part of the environment, and so remained there for the benefit of snowbound travellers.
I have a feeling that one edition had changed part of it to; 'For nearly a hundred years he had been dust...'or am I fantasising?
