I have to say that I am glad that AR preferred "jolly" to the much more irritating "spiffing" and "ripping" that inhabit (or should that be infest) several works of the same era. I think that this suggests that the Walkers and Blacketts are meant to be "middle class" (whatever that may be) rather than real toffs.
