No, John, the burglary wasn't stealing. The chemicals etc belonged to Jim Turner who had authorised Timothy to make use of them. This authorisation also covered Dick. Therefore Dick was authorised to take the materials from Beckfoot for the purposes of the assays. Had Dick gone off and sold them and kept the proceeds, then that would be theft. Had Dick damaged the window climbing in, then he might technically have committed a crime of wilful damage to property, but he didn't. To say in these circumstances that Dick was stealing is nonsense, whether you take a 'clinical' view or not.
