Personally I think that "mouse" is correct. One would lash mast hoops, for example.

I should perhaps mention a superior method of mousing sister hooks, developed by Conor O'Brien, the first Irishman to sail a yacht round the world and the first yachtsman of any nation to do so via the three great capes, (in the 1920's) whom Ransome probably knew, as a fellow member of the RCC.

Use a rubber band, rather than twine.

I am sure you wanted to know that...
