In looking through the twelve stories for references to the word,
"PIPE", I find that there are different types of pipe.

There is the Pipe that a smoker uses, which is probably the first
use of the word that may come to mind.

Even the smokers' pipe has two types, one for tobacco, and the
other for opium.

There is the Stove Pipe. It was on the Death & Glory, and on the
Igloo, and on the Houseboat (and FRAM), and on Speedy.

There is the chain pipe through which the anchor chain roared
through on its way to the bottom to set the Goblin adrift.

There is the exhaust pipe used by the engine on a motor yacht.

There were the Bagpipes that the local people played in GN to
make music.

There is the Hornpipe, a dance for sailors.

There is the pipette, that Dick and Timothy used to heat the gold
dust, only to watch it turn into a black blob and crumble away.

There is the expression, "pipe down", meaning stop making so
much noise.

There is the expression, "pipe up", meaning lead in the singing
of a sea chanty.

There is a pipe under the road to allow the beck to pass under.

There is the inlet pipe to the bilge pump on the Goblin.

--------------------------

BSCH1 - the D&G had a pipe over the stove to draw out the smoke,
and an earthenware pot to put over it to help make it work right.

BSCH3 - Old Harry Bangate, the eel man, enjoyed smoking his pipe
as he spoke of shooting the bitterns.

BSCH13 - Dr. Dudgeon is smoking his pipe sitting out on the lawn.

CCCH19 - Jim Woodall of the Sir Garnet smoked a pipe.

CCCH22 - Mr. Whittle on the Welcome of Rochester barge smoked a
pipe while the mate, Mr. Hawkins, showed them how to tie knots.

CCCH23 - Mr. Whittle and Mr. Hawkins both were smoking a pipe on
the Welcome as they waved goodby to the Teasel as it left
Beccles.

GNCH1 - On the Sea Bear, CF was smoking a pipe while Nancy
steered.

GNCH3 - CF is again smoking his pipe.

GNCH7 - One of the native Gaels, watching them, lit his pipe.

GNCH8 - CF lit his pipe, dropped the match overboard.

GNCH11 - CF is smoking his pipe waiting for the egg-collector to
come make his proposition.

GNCH12 - The Pterodactyl sailor was smoking a pipe on the quay,
waiting to try to speak with Peggy and Susan to maybe get some
information from them.

In assorted places, there are a lot of references to the bag
pipes, too many for individual listings here.

MLCH2 - CF is smoking a cigar he got in Papeete instead of his
usual pipe. Why he is making this temporary shift in his smoking
habit is not known, but it will be regretted.

MLCH4 - They were picked up by a Chinese boat whose captain was
smoking a small bamboo pipe.

MLCH9 - Chinese are smoking small pipes with bamboo stems and
metal bowls, used for smoking... not necessarily just tobacco.

MLCH11 - They were wondering where CF was, and Nancy said:

"Probably smoking a pipe of peace with the pirates," said Nancy.

This reference to a Peace Pipe is a bit of a surprise, as I have
always thought of such a ceremony to be related to the American
Indians, so how does Nancy seem to be aware of such...

MLCH13 - In a conference with Missee Lee, they see an ashtray on
which are three bamboo pipes. It is not immediately obvious as
to what kind of material is to be smoked in these, opium or
tobacco.

MLCH17 - There are various men sitting about smoking their pipes.
Again, it is not obvious as to the material being smoked.

MLCH24 - The legs of a dragon had paused in groups to smoke their
small pipes.

There was also a rather grand feast, in which the Chinese men
were all smoking their very small pipes, until they got a glazed
expression of their faces, and fell out, asleep. Not explicit,
but perhaps that was not tobacco they were smoking.

PDCH1 - Old Peter Duck was sitting on a bollard, watching the
Wild Cat, thinking about joining her crew.

PDCH3 - Titty is told to "pipe up" - that is, lead in a sea
chanty as they pull together to hoist sail.

The engine of the Wild Cat is coughing out its exhaust pipe.

PDCH4 - Both CF and PD were smoking a pipe.

PDCH5 - The old PD was "pushing the dottle of tobacco into his
pipe with a horny thumb"

CF almost burnt his fingers while lighting a pipe as he lit the
match, but seemed to forget to put it to the pipe until it burned
down too short to hold.

PDCH6 - Old PD again speaking of himself smoking his pipe.

PDCH9 - PD sitting on the roof of the deckhouse smoking his pipe.

PDCH10 - CF and PD both smoking their pipes.

PDCH14 - PD again smoking his pipe.

PDCH15 - CF and PD both smoking their pipes.

PDCH18 - PD was pushing tallow into the bottom of the sounding
lead just like pushing tobacco into his pipe.

PDCH19 - PD tapping his pipe on the rail, later pushing more
tobacco into it.

PDCH20 - while digging for the treasure, they uncover a broken
clay pipe of a style normally in use around Lowestoft, indicating
to PD that Black Jake had been there.

(This discovery of a pipe while digging for treasure reminds me
of a similar situation in SA when Titty found a pipe while
looking for CF's treasure chest.)

PDCH22 - PD is smoking his pipe while fishing.

PDCH23 - CF lights his pipe while he and John are sailing into
the island on Swallow.

PDCH25 - CF smoking his pipe as others are digging searching for
the treasure.

PMCH4 - Beck goes under the road through a pipe.

PMCH18 - needing pipettes for Timothy.

PMCH19 - Dick, prowling the study, looks for the pipettes, finds
pipe cleaners that CF uses to clean his smoking pipe.

PMCH22 - Timothy brought his pipe with him on the trek to the
mind. He had run out of matches. "First pipe since yesterday."

PPCH12 - Squashy Hat observed smoking his after breakfast pipe.

PPCH20 - Squashy was smoking his pipe in the garden at
Atkinson's.

PPCH26 - Dick needs a crucible and a blowpipe from the study at
Beckfoot.

PPCH27 - Dick and Squashy both buy blowpipes in Rio.

PPCH28 - Dick using his blowpipe on a bit of gold dust.

PPCH30 - Dick preparing to go to Beckfoot, worried about the
results of the blowpipe.

PPCH33 - Dick repeated his experiment in CF's study with the
blowpipe.

PPCH35 - After the fire, CF and Timothy relax each with a pipe.

SACH10 - Nancy reports that CF uses Polly's feathers as pipe
cleaners.

SACH11 - Nancy told about stealing CF pipe cleaner feathers for
use on their own arrows.

SACH27 - Dancing of the hornpipe. Using Polly's feathers as
pipe cleaners.

SACH28 - Titty found a pipe she thinks was left by the burglars
on Cormorant Island.

SACH29 - They rebury the burglars' pipe with the wooden fish back
where they dug up CF's chest.

SDCH4 - One of the woodsmen, riding on the horse drawn log, was
smoking a pipe.

SDCH13 - CF visits their camp, and smokes a pipe while they get
their mail ready to go back to Holly Howe.

SDCH36 - Back on Wild Cat Island, they find Polly trying to pull
CF's pipe to pieces.

SWCH2 - CAPTAIN Walker pulls out his pipe as everybody is
scrambling to get things ready to go exploring.

SWCH8 - Speedy has a pipe used for chimney.

SWCH19 - When they went to rescue Bridget, they see the yacht of
the missionaries. One of them comes up and dumps out his pipe.

SWCH25 - the old fisherman lit his pipe as Roger got to put some
tar on during their exploration of Sinbad's Creek.

SWCH31 - John was fussing at Titty for being absent when needed
to get the camp ready to be taken away and go home, but Nancy
told him to "pipe down" that Titty had finished the map.

WDCH3 - Jim Brading was smoking his pipe, and having a bit of
difficulty trying to keep it lit, as apparently he has had not
much practice in smoking a pipe.

WDCH4 - Jim is again smoking his pipe, with a lot of relighting
efforts.

WDCH5 - Jim is smoking his pipe, the ashes hissing as he dumps it
into the water over the side.

WDCH7 - Jim is missing, and he has left his pipe, which seems to
make the situation even more apprehensive.

WDCH8 - John struggles with the anchor chain in the chain pipe.

WDCH19 - John gets a bit green pulling greasy cotton waste from
the entrance to the drain pipe to the bilge pump.

WDCH22 - Daddy lit his pipe while the harbourmaster in Holland
was checking in the Goblin with help from the pilot. On the
return trip, Daddy smokes one of his Dutch cigars.

WHCH4 - They got a pipe for a chimney to work in the igloo.

WHCH6 - The pipe used as chimney in the igloo let some melting
snow drip down into the fire.

WHCH14 - They told tales about stealing the feathers for arrows
that CF was using as pipe cleaners.

WHCH22 - The smoke from the pipe over the cabin roof of the FRAM
let the explorers think that the D's had stayed over night, not
knowing that CF had returned, and he had stoked the fire.

WHCH23 - CF smoked a pipe as the others brought him up to date as
to what is going on in the FRAM.

WHCH25 - CF put the cowl on the stovepipe in preparation for the
storm at the FRAM.

------------

As for SMOKING a PIPE, who did it...

Captain Flint
Peter Duck
Daddy
Harry Bangate (eel man)
Missionary
Jim Brading
various Chinese men
including the "Legs of a Chinese Dragon"
Dr. Dudgeon
Jim Woodall
Mr. Whittle
Mr. Hawkins
a native Gael
Pterodactyl sailor
Squashy Hat
Timothy
Cormorant Island burglars
a woodsman
an old fisherman at Sinbad's Creek

I hope this satisfies any curiosity regarding "PIPE" in these stories.
