Many of the books were certainly available from the book shop by the station at Windermere.

You really have to see the Lakes, of course, and the area is every bit as beautiful as its reputation. The Wardale book (in the Footsteps) is a perfect companion there.

Pin Mill is lovely and the last time I was there looked exactly like the illustrations in WD. Including the net mender's hut that's one of the chapter separation illustrations. Secret Water, by Walton on the Naze, is another magic place that's not apparently changed much. Quite close to Pin Mill if you're driving.
