A few years ago I needed to get from Palmerston North to Auckland overnight to catch my international flight. Preferred option was the train, but when it left Wellington it was fully booked, and I was told that if I waited until it arrived at PN I might be lucky and get a seat, but there were no guarantees. However, the train arrived about 30 mins after the local Avis office closed, and faced with the option of not getting on the train and missing the flight or taking the car hire option, I plumped for Avis. Driving across North Island by night was rather like doing the same thing in the UK in the pre-motorway era, but with less traffic and some more spectacular scenery - the central volcanoes look very scary by moonlight with clouds whipping away from their summits.

Four million people in a land mass a little larger than the UK, where we have around sixty million, does tend to mean less traffic jams, except in the major cities, and overall a more pleasant driving experience, even if at a slower average speed over distance.

Glad you liked London's public transport - I agree that a car is not necessary for getting around within London, but I wonder if you tried the Tube in the rush hour ??
