Andy asked whether it was normal to help carry a stranger's pushchair up a stairway. As one who uses the London Underground in the rush hour everyday - and does a certain amount of people watching from the shelter of whatever book I am reading (and thereby preserving my integrity), I would say this was perfectly normal behaviour. So is offering to carry the case of any person who appears to be having difficulty and giving up one's seat unasked to anyone on crutches or to a mother with a clutch of small children or someone who is both elderly and looks a little unsteady on their feet.

I realise that everyone is going to have a counter story proving how dreadful Londoners are about offering help, but that's not a complete picture.

My father, who is 74, says that his experience is that young men and women in their 40s and 50s are most likely to offer him a seat.
