Having this day got back from Secret Water I can confirm that the back of Mastodon Island is tricky navigation - and that on the very top of springs. We were lucky to get through.

Also - the locals doubtless know this but for general information:-

1) George's descendants are live and well and living in colonies around Secret Water. We must have seen at least 30, with pups, basking on the mud.

2) Witches Quay is fenced off and has unwelcoming signs when approached from the sea.

3) The Map wasn't actually complete after all. There is lots more up in the Northern Waters. In fact there is a North-North East passage, very long and tortuous, coming out close to the cross roads buoy with a shingle bar at the coastal entrance with very little water even at high water springs. I don't think Nancy and Peggy could have got through in the opposite direction in the time available.

We have been going to Secret Water for 40 years and - relying on AR - never tried going north before. We didn't finish it and will have to go back - the NW passage looks probable, the NE passage doubtful - but no doubt these marshes have changed vastly in 70 years.
