I have been over Hardknott (& Wrynose) before, and thought I knew what to expect, but the former scared me badly in February - nice sunny morning, left Holly Howe to have a ride on La'al Ratty followed by a walk up the Miterdale candidate for Swallowdale. Wrynose was no problem, nor the climb up Hardknott, but on the Eskdale side there was one steep hairpin bend in shadow with what looked like a sheet of ice across it, and a nasty drop below. Dropped into first gear, hoped the ABS was in order, and proceeded very slowly over the ice field with my heart in my mouth. We made it OK, but I wish the pub in Boot had been open at that time of the morning........
