Prue - you mean the 'I was like . . ' usage doesn't offend you? Wow! Well, we're all different, I suppose. I mentioned an American tennis player - in fairness the Brits are as bad. A leading British woman tennis player (an oxymoron if there ever was one) is quoted today:
'When you're on court you're in a world of your own and when something does piss you off, it's like 'shut the f*** up'
To me that's not English - it's some other language and I can't respect anyone who talks like that, be they a tennis player, a politician, a famous author or the Pope.
(By the way, as life goes on I feel more and more sympathetic with the G.A. She was a genuine human being and she had her rights. 'We have much to learn from the past, but nothing from the present' - Voltaire.)
