Can't agree, Prue. I see language as a 'barometer' of the society which uses it. OK, it's a symptom, not a cause. Another thing - an interesting phenomenon on Tarboard is that the correspondents who live furthest away from the UK tend to have the most 'romantic' attitude to AR-derived topics - you and Ed K come to mind. Nothing wrong with that, and good luck to you, but you will have to forgive some of us over here if we have a rather more cynical attitude - urban decay, poor schools, juvenile crime blah blah. The Swallows wouldn't last 5 minutes today. The headline in my paper this morning (apart from football mourning - 'I was like gutted') is that a boy in London was casually knifed to death for his mobile phone. Nothing to do with Ransome's books? Sorry - to me that's hiding your head in the sand. Where are we all heading?
One last thing - I am always amused by the argument that the aging Socrates grumbled about youth in his day. OK, then why break a 2,400 year tradition?
