I'm not sure where you got the 'romantic' idea Peter. I was in the UK in 2001 and got an eyeful in Birmingham especially. However, NZ is no idyll despite what the advertisements might tell you. My present hometown of Christchurch was considered one of the most dangerous cities in the world not so many years ago. The Swallows are children of their time but the human animal is ever adaptive. I'm sure they would be normal if watchful 21stC citizens like the rest of us.
And as for heading? Forward is the only direction I can see (I have two just-out-of-teens plus work with several more)and I am ever optimistic. My glass is half full.
