I suspect our British colleagues would like to see EF Knight on the list - rightfully so. Melville is an odd omission. Can't imagine a list like this without Kenneth Grahame who, after all, penned the oft-quoted bit concerning "messing about it boats."

Looks to be a good list, though. May I encourage you toward Erskine Childers, Patrick O'Brian, SE Morison, and Joseph Conrad. I second Jon's mention of LF Herreshoff's Compleat Cruiser.
