Thanks that is most interesting. 1176 probably refers to when the old bridge was
commenced-but not finished till 30 years later. When they put up a new one in 1825,
in contrast, it only took six years to finish. So in (lightning mental calculation)
1831 the old bridge was torn down and some of the stones, apparently, sat about
till 1852. Then someone shipped them to the west end of the Naze and built a quay
and sheds out of them. I will have to have another look at that quay( from a proper,
no-trespassing distance). I knew someone else must have thought of looking for this;
I wonder, did you find everything marked 'No Trespassing' in 1988? So, the plaque
is, from your description, presumably made of stone and set into the wall of a stone
building near the quay. I am only asking since visits seem to be barred, otherwise
I would just go and look.

I wonder if it is still standing? If not, your slide would, obviously, be a
record of what was. I wonder if it would be possible to see it, say at one of these
'TARS' meetings, when I am round your way?

I would not be surprised if someone does turn up, as you say, who knows who
built the quay, and how he happened to get hold of the stone of a 600+ year-old
London landmark to do it. The range of knowledge that TARS have on their favorite
subject is amazing. I once had one show me a chart of how the channels *realy* run
in the Mango Islands!

Sincerely,
FrankLJ
