I can only offer encouragement. When I was reading Coot Club at a young age I was very envious of Tom and his Titmouse. The very Freedom that being on the Rivers in his little boat represented was intoxicating. I now have an Edel 540 (named Goblin), which although is bigger than Titmouse, can be sailed almost anywhere due to its shallow draft. Now, at 40, I sail out like Tom to camp out in my boat, anchored in some secluded area.

I encourage my children to be independant and competent sailors. My 16 year old son got his boating licence recently. Now I must balance my enthusiasm for his skills and his desire to take his girlfriend on over night trips.

How old was Tom in these stories?
