Thanks for your information. The inscription is gone? Agghh...so all that's left is the slides of the Canadian visitor. Funny, in the picture the stone looks pretty solidly set into the wall. Maybe the farmer removed it to stop it wearing further.

I have been trying to puzzle the inscription out from the slides-did you take any note of what it said during your visit? I thought I could make out the word 'Exhibition'. Perhaps the stones of old london bridge were on display at the Great Expo of 1851, and shipped up to Beaumont the next year. The slides were made in 1987. I did not see any cottages in them, just the barn and inscription. They were gone in '87 then, unless they are just out of shot.

Incidentaly I think I should have titled this thread 'Walton Backwaters'. But my map just says, The Naze', even though I learn that that is, strictly, just the headlands north of Walton-on-Sea.
